The frontiers of conservation

For nine days from January 29th 2010, Pucon hosts Chile's largest expo on the environment, sustainability and conservation.

The usually derelict site beside Lake Villarrica on Lincoyan, between the peninsula and the Gran Hotel, will be transformed into a showcase of local nature and culture, complete with a Mapuche food section, stream and pond and even composting toilets and a cinema.

Chilecentral.cl is providing a hybrid energy system that is capable of generating more than 20% of the energy needs, as well as demonstarting the use of solar hot water collectors. Details are in this flyer (click to download pdf).

A wide range of exhibitors will have stands at the show, including conservation organisations, renewable energy companies, artists, photographers and local historians.

The expo is also a rare oportunity for visitors to experience Mapuche medicine, history and traditional food.

More info (Spanish) including daily activities can be found on http://www.exponativa.cl/ or email terri@chilecentral.cl.
